The 60-30-10 colour rule can help you to put together a balanced colour palette, so let’s take a closer look at this interior designer principle.

What is the 60-30-10 Colour Rule?

Also sometimes called the golden rule, the 60-30-10 colour rule is a method that utilises proportions to support the selection of a balanced, harmonious colour palette. It can help you to ensure that one colour isn’t overwhelming the room, whilst also enabling you to be creative and design a space that feels true to your sense of personal style.

Under the 60-30-10 colour rule, your primary colour should account for 60% of the colour in a space. This is the colour that will help to set the overall tone of the room and will likely be used on some of the most expansive areas, such as walls, ceilings and floors.

Your secondary colour should account for 30% of a room’s colour. Taking a supporting role, this colour should provide depth and contrast in your space and is often used in key accessories such as bedding, rugs or curtains, or large pieces of furniture.

Your accent colour will account for the remaining 10% and should bring an extra element of interest whilst still complementing the primary and secondary colours. There are many ways to incorporate accents into a design, including through artwork, lampshades and cushions.

Why does the 60-30-10 colour rule work?

This simple colour rule is remarkably effective at helping to ensure that design schemes feel balanced and easy on the eye. As it uses three colours, it’s also versatile enough to provide a framework that can be built upon easily, which allows space for individuality and creativity to shine through.

How to select a dominant colour

As the most prominent colour in the palette, it’s important to choose the right dominant colour for your space. You may want to choose a subtle colour, such as a crisp white or a dusky pink, however richer shades can also work well.

You can also use the dominant colour to help blend certain features into the background. For example, selecting replacement bedroom doors in your dominant colour can streamline the appearance of wardrobes and other bedroom storage solutions.

Be bolder with your secondary colour

As you’ll be using 50% less of this colour in your space when compared to your dominant colour, you can be a little bolder with your choice.

Let’s say you want to create a feminine bedroom space. If you're keeping things simple with a crisp white dominant colour, choosing pink as your secondary colour will enable you to start incorporating a sense of softness into the room.

There are a number of key areas in which you could introduce this colour, including curtains, bedding and even storage solutions with replacement wardrobe doors, such as the Bella Shaker in matt blush pink.

Make a statement with your accent colour

In terms of packing a punch, the boldest colour in your chosen palette should be your accent colour. However, this doesn't mean that you need to choose a super bright hue.

Returning to the same example as before, using a soft yellow as an accent colour will complement the pink secondary colour without disrupting the gentle and relaxing atmosphere you want to create.

Pro Tip: Choose replacement bedroom doors in your accent colour to make a feature of your storage system.

Can the 60-30-10 colour rule be broken?

While the 60-30-10 colour rule can be very helpful, it’s by no means the only way to approach interior design. Ultimately, the colours you choose to fill your space with should make you happy, so never be afraid to be creative and follow your own intuition.

Pro Tip: Colour drenching is just one example of an alternative approach that can create stunning spaces.
